“Joe was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy when he was just six months old, a lot earlier than many other children with the condition. While it was obviously news we didn’t want to hear, having the diagnosis so early meant we felt we could be better prepared for what was to come.  I spent the next five-or-so years learning as much about the disease as I could.

“The MDUK website was one of the first places we looked at for information. It was a great resource for us to get the detail we most needed as a newly diagnosed family and without any previous knowledge of the condition. 

“I would direct any parents dealing with a new diagnosis to MDUK’s website because there is so much vital information there which has really helped us learn about Duchenne in a way that we wouldn’t have been able to without it.

“The reality for us though is that Joe’s trajectory is completely determined by his illness. And that’s why research is such a lifeline for our family. All we can do to halt that progress is to support organisations like MDUK who fund research into finding the treatments that could slow down or stop the progress of these conditions.

“Joe is a really happy, loving kid. He is very positive, very upbeat, and totally resilient, he will take almost anything in his stride. In relation to his condition, Joe knows as much as an eight-year-old can understand. He knows it’s going to progress. He knows his muscle strength is going to deteriorate. He knows that he’s going to be using a wheelchair full-time in the future. And we know that as Joe’s condition progresses, we’ll need MDUK’s services more and more.
